There are more “drop weight quickly!” social media trends than we can count or keep up with (internal shower drinks! Japanese peppermint!) However, one peculiar tendency appears to have gained far more popularity than others. We’re referring to the TikTok trend of squeezing lemon juice into your coffee to “Burn Belly Fat!” or “Lose Weight in 7 Days!”

TikToks with the hashtag #LemonCoffee have amassed millions of views, and countless YouTube videos feature dubious “before and after” images paired with shots of someone squeezing a lemon into their morning coffee and then grimacing for the camera as they drink it.

For those of us who prefer a smoother, sweeter drink, such as a cinnamon dolce latte or an almond milk mocha, the combination of lemon and coffee sounds a bit, hmm, revolting. However, is it actually possible? And could this citrus Joe, as some claim, also alleviate headaches and gastrointestinal issues? Let’s disassemble it:

Alexandra Sowa, MD, a metabolic health specialist, clinical professor of medicine at NYU School of Medicine, and founder of SoWell Health, says, “My initial response when I heard about this trend was that it doesn’t seem very good!” But in terms of weight loss? Dr. Sowa states that there is no proof that ingesting these two components together confers any specific advantage.

However, the pattern is not illogical: Black coffee, which is nearly calorie-free, has been a diet mainstay for decades. The caffeine, a stimulant that can crank your body’s engine for the day, is responsible for this effect. Dr. Sowa describes how: “Caffeine works by blocking a neurotransmitter called adenosine, which can lead to an increase in stimulating neurotransmitters such as dopamine, which makes you feel more awake and energized,” she adds. “This is why we all drink coffee in the morning.” While there is some evidence that this process may increase your basal metabolism rate (the amount of energy your cells burn just to keep your basic body functions running), Dr. Sowa cautions that to obtain this benefit, you would need to consume a large amount of caffeine—four cups per day, according to one study—which would have adverse effects on your health, such as decreased sleep, increased anxiety, and dehydration. Additionally, any boost would be short-lived as your body adapted to the caffeine, according to Dr. Sowa. She adds, “No doctor I know would ever endorse this as a weight loss method.”

What is the role of lemon in weight loss?


Lemon, a tart, yellow citrus fruit, is the second ingredient in this enchanted brew. You may have heard that drinking lemon water will aid in weight loss, but the emphasis should fall on the second term, not the first. “There’s nothing magical about lemon,” explains Dr. Sowa. “It’s just about being hydrated by drinking water, and the lemon just adds flavor.” There are many biochemical processes at play, but the most fundamental aspect is that drinking water makes you feel full. Our brain receives hunger signals that are frequently also thirst signals, but your body knows that if it tells you to eat, you will generally consume water in the course of eating. By maintaining adequate hydration, you can generally suppress some of these signals.”

Dietitian Maryann Walsh, RD, from Florida, notes that if a person loses weight while drinking lemon water, it may be because they are substituting sugar-sweetened beverages with lemon water.

Does lemon coffee provide any additional health advantages?

Again, there may be some minor health benefits, but these are normally associated with coffee consumption; adding lemon to coffee is nothing exceptional. These consist of:

Caffeine is a component in a number of headache treatments. Research indicates that it can be an effective method for preventing migraine pain; but, in some people, caffeine is a migraine trigger, so you must be aware of your body’s reaction. What does lemon coffee taste like?

Coffee bean varietals are occasionally described as having a “lemony” or “citrusy” tone, so it’s not a total surprise that the two flavors can be combined. The Algerian practice of sipping Mazagran is essentially iced coffee with a slice of lemon. If you’re accustomed to a sweeter, creamier morning brew, the thought of coffee drenched in lemon juice may be a bit off-putting. In the name of science and journalism, I sampled this mixture and was pleasantly surprised to discover that it tasted… okay. It was refreshing but not as bitter as I had anticipated; yet, I have no intention of replacing my daily oat-milk latte. If you like to try it, please do so! But don’t squeeze lemon into a latte or even a standard drip with a dash of milk in it; the lemon juice will curdle any dairy in the cup, which will overpower the citrusy tang.

Is drinking coffee with lemon dangerous?


As TikTok trends or “challenges” go, this one appears very harmless. Caffeine consumption, especially in excessive quantities, can cause a variety of negative effects, including dizziness, heart palpitations, anxiety, stomach difficulties, and an accelerated heart rate. Additionally, much citrus might cause gastrointestinal troubles and heartburn.

Therefore, does coffee with lemon aid in weight loss?

If you replace a very calorie morning beverage, such as a Venti Pumpkin Spice Latte, with unsweetened black coffee with lemon, there may be some advantage for weight loss. But instead of ruining your morning routine by forcing yourself to drink something you don’t enjoy, follow Dr. Sowa’s advice: Simply consume a big glass of water upon waking to ensure hydration, and then enjoy your customary, lemon-free cup of coffee. “Please keep in mind that any health or weight reduction solution that sounds too quick, too simple, or too wonderful to be true is almost always a scam,” she says.
